New Zealand Cat Association Inc.
The New Zealand Siamese Cat Association is a nationwide specialist breed club. Membership is open to owners of registered, pedigree Siamese cats. Associate membership (no voting rights) is open to anyone.
Its aims are to:
The Association also has a recommended Standard of Quality relating to the breeding and sale of Siamese kittens which its members are expected to adhere to. This covers such aspects as the age, minimum weight, and health of all kittens offered for sale, and ensures that high quality NZCF registered kittens are available to the public from its members. The Association has an interest in all aspects of welfare of Siamese cats and kittens, and works in conjunction with other welfare groups to provide assistance where needed.
The Association publishes a magazine "Sia-muse" which covers many aspects of Siamese cats, their owners, cat shows/results, stud cats and kitten notices etc., and from time to time general meetings, discussion groups and social activities are held for members and friends. Whenever possible, overseas specialist judges are engaged to officiate at the Association's shows.
The Club was first formed in 1954. It was based in Hamilton with its members travelling from Auckland, Rotorua and Napier to attend meetings, and had a branch in Otago which is now the Otago Siamese and Shorthair Pedigree Cat Club. Siamese only shows commenced in Auckland the 1960's.
In 1983 a number of enthusiasts in the South Island banded together to hold a show, under the auspices of the NZSCA which was still based in the North Island, in Christchurch. This show was a great success with nearly 100 Siamese exhibits.
The Club continued with its base in the North Island, but the rise in popularity of Oriental cats, which are fully intermatable with Siamese, saw numbers of Siamese and dedicated members decline. Interest in the breed gradually waned in the Auckland area, and in 1993 the Club moved its headquarters to Christchurch where it continues to hold an annual show in April each year.
